GameStop Signs Multi-Year Deal as a Presenting Sponsor of the Major League Gaming Pro Circuit
GRAPEVINE, Texas and NEW YORK, June 29, 2006 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- With the Major League Gaming (MLG) 2006 season heating up, GameStop Corp., the largest videogame and entertainment software retailer, today announced that it has joined as a presenting sponsor and the official global videogame retailer for the Boost Mobile MLG Pro Circuit.
"This deal will leverage the extensive physical store and online reach of the company's 4,500 GameStop and EB Games retail stores across the United States and worldwide," indicated Jack Beuttell, Senior Vice President of Marketing, GameStop Corp.
GameStop joins Boost Mobile(R), a leading youth lifestyle brand, Toyota's Scion, and Red Bull as major supporters of the League.
As a presenting sponsor, GameStop will have a significant presence at each of the professional competitions as well as through MLG's media distribution outlets, including television, mobile, and online. "We've been a long-time supporter of MLG and we are thrilled to be a part of this exciting league of professionals and gaming enthusiasts," said Tom De Napoli, Vice President of Marketing of GameStop Corp.
MLG is the dominant professional video gaming league in America. By raising video game competition to the level of professional sports, and packaging that competition for the mass market, MLG provides players, game publishers, and media partners a unique connection with the 168 million Americans playing video games today.
The excitement of the 2006 MLG Pro Circuit is at an all time high as Team Final Boss remains undefeated while Str8 Rippin and Team Carbon are nipping at their heels in the team competition. Str8 Rippin, led by Tom "Tsquared" Taylor, just suffered their first defeat by Team Carbon in Anaheim last weekend. Some individuals, including Hali, Legit and Naded, are rising to prominence as surprising contenders in the 1v1 competitions. The stakes are high as there are only two regular competitions left before the playoffs in New York City and the finals in Las Vegas.
"GameStop's retail leadership has helped expand the videogame market and they're a natural partner as we take video gaming to the masses," said Erik Semmelhack, EVP of Global Sales & Partnerships, MLG. "Our partnership will bring Major League Gaming into thousands of stores around the world and will help to elevate our fast-growing business."
The Boost Mobile Major League Gaming Pro Circuit Presented by Scion and GameStop is holding pro competitions in seven cities in 2006: Secaucus (The Meadowlands), Dallas, Anaheim, Chicago, Orlando, New York (Playoffs) and Las Vegas (National Championship). The next competition will be held in Chicago, June 21-23, 2006.
