GameStop Named to Newsweek's Inaugural "Greenest Big Companies in America" List

October 19, 2009

GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 2009-- GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) announced it is included in Newsweek magazine’s inaugural “Greenest Big Companies in America” top 500 ranking. The world’s largest video game and entertainment software retailer was ranked 36th out of 52 retailers and 228th out of the 500 companies included on the list. The comprehensive list is also viewable online at www.newsweek.com.

According to Newsweek, it collaborated with three research partners to compile the rankings. Measurement factors included environmental, social and governance data, quantitative environmental performance measurement, and social responsibility, sustainability and environmental reporting. The Green Score for each company was based on a compilation of three components, including its environmental impact score, its green policies score and its reputation score. These scores were derived by measuring such things as a company’s actual resource use and emissions, its policies and strategies, and its peer group reputation. The list is categorized by 15 industry sectors and comprises the largest U.S. companies as measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees.

“GameStop has made great strides in its green initiatives in recent years, and we are excited our team members are being acknowledged for their hard work and dedication by such a respected publication,” said Paul Raines, GameStop’s chief operating officer. “We tirelessly strive to reduce energy and waste in our offices and more than 6,200 domestic and international stores, because it’s not only good for the world in which we live, it’s simply good business.”

Raines said GameStop is partnering with a variety of leading companies to explore greener and more cost effective ways to conduct its business. For example, he said the company recently joined with Waste Management, a leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America, to test better and more efficient recycling programs for its stores.

In addition, Raines said the company is working with Advantage IQ to track utility invoice data of individual stores. This information is translated into a baseline carbon emissions footprint that can be used by GameStop to drive a store’s financial and environmental performance.

The company is also developing system-wide environmental management system (EMS) processes and practices to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and increase its operating efficiency through better lighting, heat and air conditioning usage. Initial tests of this system on the individual store level have yielded as much as a 30-percent savings in energy usage.

GameStop has also carved out its position as the world’s largest recycler of video games and video game consoles. Customers can trade in their used gaming products in exchange for commerce that can be used to purchase new games and equipment. These previously owned materials are refurbished, cleaned and tested before being recycled for sale at GameStop stores nationwide.
